Overview

Digital sound sources come from so many devices and they usually have their own DACs built in.

It is possible to have an external stand alone DAC built to do it’s job for all sources in the home that have a Digital Out socket. The market for DACs for home use is well developed and has many offerings. But this Arcam rSeries Sonlink is built to work with Sonos both in design and looks. It is the small box under the Sonos in this picture.

The way DACs measure quality can to a large part be masures in the sampling rate. This is the frequency, can be seen as level of detail, that the unit can handle. So if we have a high frequency then the higher frequency notes can be very clear to the ear. This is very important in string instruments and vocals. One can also often hear more subtle sounds in complex music. For example and background tambourine or violine. Take Noah and the Whale as an example here on youtube “L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N” .
