So what is this new gadget?

It converts digital music from iTunes, CD, TV, Internet radio or streaming sources to the analogue sound we can hear. Before this it is all digital ones and zeros. This Arcam DAC replaces the need for the built-in-DAC (Digital to Analogue Convertor) circuits in the Sonos Connect and Sonos Connect Amp for one with a higher specification. Digital sound sources come from so many devices and they usually have their own DACs built in.

It is possible to have an external stand alone DAC built to do it’s job for all sources in the home that have a Digital Out socket. The market for DACs for home use is well developed and has many offerings. But this Arcam rSeries Sonlink is built to work with Sonos both in design and looks. It is the small box under the Sonos in this picture.

If you also have the Sonos wireless speakers you can hear sound from all the music sources from TV, iTunes, Spotify etc. to radio in any room without wires.

The way DACs measure quality can to a large part be seen in the sampling rate. This is the frequency, can be seen as level of detail, that the unit can handle. So if we have a high frequency then the higher frequency notes can be very clear to the ear. This is very important in string instruments and vocals. In this case the rates are Supported sample rates: 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 192kHz. 192Hz is the highest available on domestic equipment.
